Our ESR Lia ní Aodha has got a paper accepted at the 13th Annual Conference of the European Social Simulation Association (ESSA). ESSA is the main European scientific society to promote social simulation and computation social science, and the conference will be held in Dublin this September. She will present her paper, entitled “Ontological Politics in a world of political ontologies” during the Special SIG Session on Qualitative Data for informing behavioural rules.
The paper highlights some of the philosophical and sociological tensions apparent in the effort to utilise qualitative data to inform agent based models. Agent based representations of the world invite a number of critiques both in this respect, and more generally, that may render such as antithetical to qualitative approaches to research. Some of these issues are explored in this paper.
